From Mano Amiga to Benilde: Scholars Turn Dreams into Reality

When Jade and J-da look back at their years in Mano Amiga, both see more than just classes, projects, and exams. They see a second home; a place that nurtured their talents, encouraged their voices, and believed in them at every step. This foundation has carried them to an incredible milestone: both are now heading to De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde as scholars, ready to pursue their dreams.

Discovering Their Passions

The road to Benilde was not a straight one for either student. J-da shared that when she was younger, she thought her future was in animation. She loved bringing drawings to life, creating characters, and imagining worlds. But as she grew, she realized her skills extended beyond illustration. “I was also pretty good at programming,” she said with a smile. “So I decided to take on game design.” What started as a curiosity became a clear career path, one where she could combine her creativity and technical skills.

Jade’s journey took a different turn. Like J-da, she began by exploring animation. But during her Grade 12 work immersion, she discovered architecture. “My parents always wanted me to become an architect, but I wasn’t sure at first,” she shared. “Then I got to experience it myself, and I felt inspired to take it seriously.” What once seemed uncertain now feels like a calling, one she is determined to pursue wholeheartedly.

The Mano Amiga Impact

Both scholars agree that Mano Amiga gave them much more than an academic foundation, it also shaped who they are. For J-da, some of her most memorable experiences were when teachers encouraged her to create comics as part of different subjects. It was a way to show that learning wasn’t confined to books; it could be expressed through art, storytelling, and imagination.

For Jade, the school’s Project-Based Learning (PBL) activities stood out. These challenged students to think critically and creatively, while also working with others. “I learned to be matatag despite the challenges,” Jade reflected.

But perhaps the biggest transformation was in their confidence. J-da recalled how shy and reserved she was at the start of her journey. “I struggled with communication in my early years, but Mano Amiga helped me become more social and part of a community.” That confidence made all the difference.

The Road to Benilde

When it came time to choose a university, both were drawn to Benilde. For J-da, the school’s reputation in the arts made it an easy decision. “It has my chosen course and is known for its quality education,” she said. The promise of being surrounded by like-minded creatives and innovators excited her.

Jade echoed the sentiment, highlighting Benilde’s facilities. “The facilities are complete and of high quality,” she explained. “I fell in love with wanting to be in Benilde.” But gaining admission was only half the battle. To make their dreams possible, both had to secure scholarships.

For J-da, this meant applying for financial aid. For Jade, it meant submitting a portfolio for a talent-based grant. Both described the moment they received their acceptance and scholarship offers as unforgettable.

A Future Shaped by Generosity

If there is one thing Jade and J-da want to emphasize, it is the life-changing power of their sponsors. For them, sponsorship is not just about covering tuition. It is about hope, encouragement, and belief.

“I feel appreciated and hopeful,” shared J-da. “Someone I haven't met has faith in my abilities and it makes me motivated to try. I don't always believe in myself but knowing my sponsor does, it gives me a small push.”

Jade echoed the same gratitude. “I like the anonymity between us because it sort of builds this unspoken trust. It also blows my mind how someone who I've never met is supporting me, which goes to show how kind and generous they are. I feel very happy knowing that someone believes in me and my dreams.”

When asked if they now feel more confident pursuing their passions, both answered with a resounding yes.

And if given the chance to meet their sponsors, their words reveal just how deeply the support has touched their lives. “Even if I haven't met you, you've impacted my life in big ways,” said J-da. “I'm able to develop my skills and hone them, I'm able to study in schools that give me a high quality education, and my family is able to pay my tuition. I am honored and genuinely thankful for the support you have given me throughout the years.”

Jade added, “To be honest, I am often very uncertain with myself, but to think that there are people who believe in me warms my heart. I am so fortunate to have a life full of support and care because with everyone including you, I was and will be able to reach all of my successes. With that, I thank you po.”

Looking Ahead

Now on their way to Benilde, both are filled with anticipation for what lies ahead. J-da is excited about joining game development events and immersing herself in a world where technology and creativity meet. Jade is eager to design building plans, learn from mentors, and join architecture competitions. Both see their college years not only as a chance to refine their skills but also as an opportunity to grow as individuals who can one day give back to others.

And when asked what advice they would give to the younger students at Mano Amiga, their words carried the wisdom of experience. “Be strong, and it will pass,” said J-da, reminding them that struggles are temporary. Jade added, “Learn to be matatag. The world outside Mano is tougher, but stay true to yourself and keep going.”

Their journeys are a testament to what happens when determination meets support. With resilience in their hearts and generosity behind them, Jade and J-da are ready to take the next big step. Their stories are not just about personal success; they are reminders that when a community invests in education, dreams turn into reality, and futures are forever changed.
